The process
The following images demonstrate the typical development of an architectural visual from the brief, rendering technique and the purpose of the visual has been discussed, including the size. When all the supporting material has been reviewed, a 'rough' is prepared (sometimes several variations for further discussions). Digital or physical models may be constructed to help choose the definitive view.

In this case the background material encompassed photographs of the site supplied by DLA Architects. With references partly to plans and elevations, partly by eye, the visual started taking form. Discussions were held as to the usage of figures, cars, landscaping and street furniture, as well as materials and architectural details.

Example:
The Crossways, Croydon
DLA Architects, 2007

This image is discussed with the client, alterations are noted, construction and architectural details developed, changes made and the final setup confirmed.

The rough is traced in skeleton outline to transfer onto board or watercolour paper as shown.

Finally the image is coloured, with reference to the samples, photographs or other material supplied to achieve the correct composition and balance.

A trial scan is made to assess the tonal values as electronically manipulated, and any highlights or final adjustments made before the image is handed to the client.
